The New Westminster Environmental Partners (NWEP) is a member driven, non-partisan group of citizens who, through action and engagement, support sustainability focused projects embraced by all political parties, organizations and individuals.

Mission

To work with residents, businesses, and government agencies within the city, as well as regional (locally connected) environmental groups, to achieve environmental, social and economic sustainability in New Westminster through the identification of issues, education, public advocacy, the promotion of best practices, and the implementation of effective projects.

We believe New Westminster has an incredible opportunity, due to its size and geography, to become a leader in sustainability. By working together with residents, businesses and civic leaders we believe that potential can be realized.

History

The NWEP started almost a decade ago with three people around a kitchen table, after the City of New Westminster put together its “Green Action Plan” as a response to the Province’s requirement for municipalities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Since then, the organization has seen many changes, and levels of activities, but the constant has been the passion of New Westminster residents to become actively involved and make a difference in their neighbourhoods and the community as a whole.  The NWEP has given residents a group to get behind to advocate for environmental issues, and smart urban growth, which did not exist before.  The NWEP has acted as a crucible for new groups such as the Royal City Farmers Market, various community gardens, Doc Fest and more.  The NWEP has provided a platform, and networking opportunities for people to connect on issues that matter to them.

The vision of the NWEP remains to support the community to create meaningful and positive change for now, and for the future.
